Interdisciplinary thought

There is a systemic problem facing our institutions of higher learning today. A problem that involves over-specialization and under-communication between the researchers, students and faculty of different disciplines. Although the division of academia into distinct categories is valuable for organizational purposes,.. excessively departmentalizing the pursuit of knowledge impedes our ability to address complex problems which most often span multiple disciplines.

The study of pollution, for example, is typically relegated to the field of environmental sciences. The issue however has tendrils which reach far into the worlds of business, medicine and engineering, to name just a few.

The latin root of the word university, universus means "whole, entire, or to turn into one”. Letting these core roots fade from our educational institutions through the practice of disciplinary isolationism blocks our ability to integrate ideas and innovate across fields of study.

What are the reasons for this lack of integration? And how can this be remedied?
